A fire in Simcoe yesterday has claimed the life of one man and a family pet.

 

On Monday, April 20, 2020, at approximately 10:00 p.m., an officer with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment was on patrol when they observed a residence on fire at a Culver Street, Simcoe, Norfolk County address.

 

The patrolling officer immediately jumped into action was able to remove a resident from a ground floor apartment located on the property.

 

Due to the fire, officers were unable to gain entry into the second floor apartment and contacted the Norfolk County Fire Department and Norfolk County Paramedic Services. Volunteer firefighters arrived on scene and were met with an active fire however volunteers made their way through the residence where they located a male and a deceased family pet.

 

The male was subsequently transported to a local area hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced deceased by the attending physicians.

 

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been contacted and will be attending. The name of the deceased in being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

 

The Norfolk County OPP Crime Unit with the assistance of the OPP Forensic Identification Services is continuing to investigate this incident.
