Norfolk County OPP Detachments primary are reminding the public their focus is public safety and they want to reinforce to the public that if they have a complaint about an animal, they need to contact an animal removal service.

On Wednesday, April 1, 2020, at approximately 6:47 p.m., police received a 9-1-1 call from a resident located in Waterford that was concerned about a deer located in the Waterford deer park. It appeared that the deer was chewing on a bag near a water tower and the resident contacted 9-1-1 because they feared for the animal’s health due to the unknown contents in the bag and wanted police to attend?

The OPP is continuing to being inundated with calls for service from members of the public wanting police to deal with animal complaints. Homeowners who have issues with raccoons, snakes, skunks or bats or any other animal on their property need to call a private animal removal service.

“The OPP does not have the equipment to trap and house live animals or transport wild animals. Calling the police to deal with a nuisance animal ties up the phone lines at the communications center and ties up law enforcement officers when they could be focusing on other issues in the community. A private animal removal service should be contacted instead of calling the police.” – Inspector Joseph Varga, Detachment Commander, Norfolk County OPP
