In response to the on-going call for reforms at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Center, the provincial government announced today a list of measure aimed at enhancing security and improving safety at the embattled institution.
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Michael Tibollo, along with Elgin-Middlesex MPP Jeff Yurek made the announcement that includes additional correctional staff, more random cell searches, enhanced body scanning training for staff, new drug detection kits and establishing a dedicated hospital escort team for inmate health care.
In August, 12 inmates were hospitalized with overdoses at the facility. And, since 2009, over 24 inmates have died. The new regulations come into effect on Monday.
