The Thorold Athletics have applied for a one-year leave of absence from the Allan Cup hockey league.  The team expressed their profound disappointment with the late withdrawl but promised to re-group for the 2018-19 season.  Ensuring players still had an opportunity to participate in the upcoming season, the league conducted a draft of eligible players.  Allan Cup Hockey is the business name for the O-H-A Senior triple-A league, with a tradition dating back to 1891.  The Allan Cup, Canada's oldest amateur hockey trophy goes back to 1908.

Australian Marc Leishman remains the leader through two rounds of the P-G-A's B-M-W Championship.  Leishman followed yesterday's 62 with a 7-under 64 for a 16-under total, three shots ahead of Jason Day and Rickie Fowler.  Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ontario, is tied for 12th at 7 under after shooting a 68.

Kyle Busch opened his bid for a second NASCAR Cup championship with a lap of 187-point-9-6-3 miles per hour to win the pole at Chicagoland Speedway.  Busch and Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin will start on the front row and fellow Toyota driver Martin Truex Junior was third.  Truex has four wins and is considered the favourite to win his first career Cup title.
