OPP boatsA dive team has been called in after a swimmer disappeared in the water at a beach in Windsor.
Fire crews and police were called to Sandpoint Beach about 4:30 a.m. after reports of a woman in the water.
Police say the woman and three men, all students from the University of Windsor, were at the beach when the woman and one of the men went in the water.
The 20-year-old woman went beyond the roped-off safety area, where the water can be up to three metres deep, slipped beneath the surface and disappeared.
Police say none of the four students could swim.
Staff Sergeant Mike Langlois says there is some indication alcohol was consumed, but it's not known if that was a factor in the disappearance.
Coincidentally, the office of Ontario's Chief Coroner says there will be a review of all drownings in the province in May, June, July and August.
Dr. Bert Lauwers says the aim is see if there are common factors in the deaths and make recommendations to help prevent similar deaths in the future.
In the meantime, lauwers recommends all residents should learn to swim, which he calls a basic life skill.
He also urges people wear a life-jacket or personal flotation device even if they are strong swimmers, and for adults to closely supervise children at all times during water activities.
Lauwers also recommends that someone driving a boat should not drink alcohol. (jlw/cp)
