Tinder dry conditions allowed a small fire to get out of control yesterday on a farm in Courtland.

Norfolk County Fire says a farmer was attempting to place a bale of bean-stalk into an incinerator when it caught fire before being placed in the unit. That caused surrounding dry grass to ignite. The farmer tried to use a backhoe to gain control of the fire but the machine stalled an it too caught fire. The farmer was able to escape without injury but the fire spread to a nearby barn.

By the time crews arrived the backhoe and the barn were fully engulfed.

The barn and backhoe were completely destroyed.

Cost of damage is pegged at $300,000.
