Fumigant release closes Norfolk road

 The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Norfolk County Detachment along with emergency services responded to a Mall Road, Middleton, Norfolk County, ON, address as a result of a fumigant release. 

On Friday, June 15, 2012 at approximately 10:57 pm Police, Norfolk Fire, and Ambulance personnel responded to a Mall Road address at approximately 10:57 pm, as a result of a soil fumigant being released in the air. Two residents of the area left on their own accord in order for the fumigant to dissipate. 

Investigation revealed that the soil fumigant used in the growing of ginseng crops was released into the air from the ground. The fumigant has been used in the farming industry for the last twenty years and is known as Chloropicrin, and acts as an irritant to humans. 

As a result the following roads are closed. 

Mall Road from Highway #59 to Middleton Church Road. 

Schafer Road from Mall Road to 1st Concession NTR. 

If anyone is feeling the effects of this fumigant such as eye irritation, nausea or if you are having difficulty breathing you should seek out medical attention. 

The Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture have been notified.
